Surah The Flame [Al-Masadd] Ayah 5 Location Maccah Number 111

تَبَّتْ يَدَآ أَبِى لَهَبٍۢ وَتَبَّ ﴿١﴾

May the hands of Abu Lahab be ruined, and ruined is he.

Transliteration

Tabbat yada abee lahabin watabba

Ahmed Ali

DESTROYED WILL BE the hands of Abu Lahab, and he himself will perish.

Ahmed Raza Khan

May both the hands of Abu Lahab be destroyed – and they are destroyed!

Arberry

Perish the hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he!

Daryabadi

Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he!

Hilali & Khan

Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab (an uncle of the Prophet), and perish he!

Itani

Condemned are the hands of Abee Lahab, and he is condemned.

Maududi

Destroyed were the hands of Abu Lahab, and he lay utterly doomed.

Mubarakpuri

Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab and perish he!

Pickthall

The power of Abu Lahab will perish, and he will perish.

Qarai

Perish the hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he!

Qaribullah & Darwish

Perish the hands of AbiLahab, and perish he!

Sarwar

May the hands of Abu Lahab perish!

Shakir

Perdition overtake both hands of Abu Lahab, and he will perish.

Wahiduddin Khan

May the hands of Abu Lahab perish, may he be ruined.

Yusuf Ali

Perish the hands of the Father of Flame! Perish he!

مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥ وَمَا كَسَبَ ﴿٢﴾

His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained.

Transliteration

Ma aghna AAanhu maluhu wama kasaba

Ahmed Ali

Of no avail shall be his wealth, nor what he has acquired.

Ahmed Raza Khan

His wealth did not benefit him in the least, nor did whatever he earned.

Arberry

His wealth avails him not, neither what he has earned;

Daryabadi

His substance availed him not, nor that which he earned.

Hilali & Khan

His wealth and his children (etc.) will not benefit him!

Itani

His wealth did not avail him, nor did what he acquired.

Maududi

His wealth did not avail him, nor his acquisitions.

Mubarakpuri

His wealth and his children will not benefit him!

Pickthall

His wealth and gains will not exempt him.

Qarai

Neither his wealth availed him, nor what he had earned.

Qaribullah & Darwish

His wealth will not suffice him, neither what he has gained;

Sarwar

May he too perish!

Shakir

His wealth and what he earns will not avail him.

Wahiduddin Khan

Neither his wealth nor his gains will avail him.

Yusuf Ali

No profit to him from all his wealth, and all his gains!

سَيَصْلَىٰ نَارًۭا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍۢ ﴿٣﴾

He will [enter to] burn in a Fire of [blazing] flame

Transliteration

Sayasla naran thata lahabin

Ahmed Ali

He will be roasted in the fire,

Ahmed Raza Khan

He will soon enter the flaming fire.

Arberry

he shall roast at a flaming fire

Daryabadi

Anon he shall roast into Fire having flame.

Hilali & Khan

He will be burnt in a Fire of blazing flames!

Itani

He will burn in a Flaming Fire.

Maududi

Surely, he will be cast into a Flaming Fire

Mubarakpuri

He will enter a Fire full of flames!

Pickthall

He will be plunged in flaming Fire,

Qarai

Soon he will enter the blazing fire,

Qaribullah & Darwish

he shall roast at a Flaming Fire,

Sarwar

His property and worldly gains will be of no help to him.

Shakir

He shall soon burn in fire that flames,

Wahiduddin Khan

He shall soon enter a Blazing Fire,

Yusuf Ali

Burnt soon will he be in a Fire of Blazing Flame!

وَٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ حَمَّالَةَ ٱلْحَطَبِ ﴿٤﴾

And his wife [as well] - the carrier of firewood.

Transliteration

Waimraatuhu hammalata alhatabi

Ahmed Ali

And his wife, the portress of fire wood,

Ahmed Raza Khan

And so will his wife; carrying a bundle of firewood on her head.

Arberry

and his wife, the carrier of the firewood,

Daryabadi

And his wife also: the firewood carrier;

Hilali & Khan

And his wife too, who carries wood (thorns of Sadan which she used to put on the way of the Prophet (Peace be upon him), or use to slander him).

Itani

And his wife—the firewood carrier.

Maududi

along with his wife, that carrier of slanderous tales;

Mubarakpuri

And his wife too, who carries wood.

And his wife, the wood-carrier,

Qarai

and his wife [too], the firewood carrier,

Qaribullah & Darwish

and his wife, laden with firewood

He will suffer in a blazing fire

And his wife, the bearer of fuel,

and also his wife who carries the fuel,

His wife shall carry the (crackling) wood - As fuel!-

فِى جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌۭ مِّن مَّسَدٍۭ ﴿٥﴾

Around her neck is a rope of [twisted] fiber.

Transliteration

Fee jeediha hablun min masadin

Ahmed Ali

Will have a strap of fibre rope around her neck.

Ahmed Raza Khan

A rope made from palm fibre around her neck!

Arberry

upon her neck a rope of palm-fibre.

Daryabadi

On her neck shall be a cord of twisted fibre.

Hilali & Khan

In her neck is a twisted rope of Masad (palm fibre).

Itani

Around her neck is a rope of thorns.

Maududi

upon her neck shall be a rope of palm-fibre.

Mubarakpuri

In her neck is a twisted rope of Masad.

Pickthall

Will have upon her neck a halter of palm-fibre.

Qarai

with a rope of palm fibre around her neck.

Qaribullah & Darwish

shall have a rope of palmfiber around her neck!

Sarwar

and so too will his wife who (threw thorns and firewood in the Prophet's way). Around her neck will be a rope of palm fibre.

Shakir

Upon her neck a halter of strongly twisted rope.

Wahiduddin Khan

with a rope of twisted fibre round her neck.

Yusuf Ali

A twisted rope of palm-leaf fibre round her (own) neck!
