Surah Solace [Al-Inshirah] Ayah 8 Location Maccah Number 94

أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ ﴿١﴾

Did We not expand for you, [O Muhammad], your breast?

Transliteration

Alam nashrah laka sadraka

Ahmed Ali

HAVE WE NOT opened up your breast

Did We not widen your bosom?

Did We not expand thy breast for thee

Have We not opened forth for thee thy breast?

Have We not opened your breast for you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him))?

Did We not soothe your heart?

(O Prophet), Did We not lay open your breast

Have We not opened your breast for you

Have We not caused thy bosom to dilate,

وَوَضَعْنَا عَنكَ وِزْرَكَ ﴿٢﴾

And We removed from you your burden

Transliteration

WawadaAAna AAanka wizraka

And removed your burden

And relieve you of the burden –

Allathee anqada thahraka

Which had left you devoid of hope,

Which had broken your back?

the burden that weighed down thy back?

The which did gall thy back?-

وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ ﴿٤﴾

And raised high for you your repute.

Transliteration

WarafaAAna laka thikraka

Ahmed Ali

And exalted your fame?

And We have exalted your remembrance for you.

Did We not exalt thy fame?

Daryabadi

And We have upraised for thee thy renown.

Hilali & Khan

And raised high your fame?

Itani

And raised for you your reputation?

And did We not exalt your fame?

And have We not raised high your fame

And exalted thy fame?

Did We not exalt your name?

Have We not raised your remembrance?

and granted you an exalted reputation?

And exalted for you your esteem?

have We not given you high renown?

And raised high the esteem (in which) thou (art held)?

فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا ﴿٥﴾

For indeed, with hardship [will be] ease.

Transliteration

Fainna maAAa alAAusri yusran

Ahmed Ali

Surely with hardship there is ease.

So indeed with hardship is ease.

So truly with hardship comes ease,

Daryabadi

Then verily along with every hardship is ease.

Hilali & Khan

So verily, with the hardship, there is relief,

With hardship comes ease.

Indeed, there is ease with hardship.

Verily, along with every hardship is relief,

But lo! with hardship goeth ease,

Indeed ease accompanies hardship.

Indeed, hardship is followed by ease,

With hardship indeed there is ease.

truly with hardship comes ease.'

Verily along with every hardship is ease.

Verily, with the hardship, there is relief (i.e. there is one hardship with two reliefs, so one hardship cannot overcome two reliefs).

With hardship comes ease.

Most certainly, there is ease with hardship.

Verily, along with every hardship is relief.

Lo! with hardship goeth ease;

Indeed ease accompanies hardship.

Certainly, after every difficulty there comes relief.

فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَٱنصَبْ ﴿٧﴾

So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship].

Faitha faraghta fainsab

So when you are free work diligently,

So when you finish the prayer, strive in supplication.

So when thou art empty, labour,

Daryabadi

Then when thou becometh relieved, toil;

Hilali & Khan

So when you have finished (from your occupation), then stand up for Allah's worship (i.e. stand up for prayer).

Itani

When your work is done, turn to devotion.

Maududi

So, whenever you are free, strive in devotion,

Mubarakpuri

So when you have finished, devote yourself to Allah's worship.

So when thou art relieved, still toil

Qarai

So when you are done, appoint,

Qaribullah & Darwish

So, when you have finished (your prayer), labor (in supplication),

Sarwar

When you are free from (your obligations), strive hard (to worship God)

Shakir

So when you are free, nominate.

So, when you are free, strive hard,

Therefore, when thou art free (from thine immediate task), still labour hard,

وَإِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَٱرْغَب ﴿٨﴾

And to your Lord direct [your] longing.

Transliteration

Waila rabbika fairghab

Ahmed Ali

And turn to your Lord with all your love.

And incline towards your Lord.

and let thy Lord be thy Quest.

And Unto thine Lord, attend.

Hilali & Khan

And to your Lord (Alone) turn (all your intentions and hopes and) your invocations.

Itani

And to your Lord turn for everything.

Maududi

and turn to your Lord with longing.

Mubarakpuri

And to your Lord turn intentions and hopes.

Pickthall

And strive to please thy Lord.

Qarai

and supplicate your Lord.

Qaribullah & Darwish

and let your longing be for your Lord (in humility).

Sarwar

and be devoted to your Lord's service.

Shakir

And make your Lord your exclusive object.

Wahiduddin Khan

and to your Lord turn [all] your attention.

Yusuf Ali

And to thy Lord turn (all) thy attention.
