Surah The night [Al-Lail] Ayah 21 Location Maccah Number 92

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ ﴿١﴾

By the night when it covers

Transliteration

Waallayli itha yaghsha

Ahmed Ali

I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over,

Ahmed Raza Khan

By oath of the night when it covers

Arberry

By the night enshrouding

Daryabadi

By the night when it envelopeth,

Hilali & Khan

By the night as it envelops;

Itani

By the night as it covers.

Maududi

By the night when it enshrouds,

By the night as it envelops.

By the night when it envelops,

By the night, when it envelops,

By the night when it covers the day,

I swear by the night when it draws a veil,

By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness,

By the Night as it conceals (the light);

وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ ﴿٢﴾

And [by] the day when it appears

Transliteration

Waalnnahari itha tajalla

Ahmed Ali

And the day when it shines in all its glory,

Ahmed Raza Khan

And by oath of the day when it shines

and the day in splendour

Daryabadi

By the day when it appeareth in glory,

Hilali & Khan

And by the day as it appears in brightness;

Itani

And the day as it reveals.

and by the day when it breaks in its glory,

By the day as it appears.

And the day resplendent

by the day when it brightens,

and by the day when it unveils.

by the day when it appears radiant,

And the day when it shines in brightness,

By the Day as it appears in glory;

وَمَا خَلَقَ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰٓ ﴿٣﴾

And [by] He who created the male and female,

Transliteration

Wama khalaqa alththakara waalontha

Ahmed Ali

And Him who created the male and female,

Ahmed Raza Khan

And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female.

and That which created the male and the female,

By Him Who hath created the male and the female,

Hilali & Khan

And by Him Who created male and female;

And He who created the male and the female.

and by Him Who created the male and the female:

By Him Who created male and female.

And Him Who hath created male and female,

by Him who created the male and the female:

And by Who created the male and female,

and by that (Power) which created the male and female,

And the creating of the male and the female,

and by the creation of the male and the female.

Yusuf Ali

By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;-

إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّىٰ ﴿٤﴾

Indeed, your efforts are diverse.

Transliteration

Inna saAAyakum lashatta

Ahmed Ali

That your endeavour is for different ends.

Ahmed Raza Khan

Indeed your efforts differ.

Arberry

surely your striving is to diverse ends.

Daryabadi

Verily your endeavour is diverse.

Hilali & Khan

Certainly, your efforts and deeds are diverse (different in aims and purposes);

Itani

Your endeavors are indeed diverse.

Maududi

surely your strivings are divergent.

Mubarakpuri

Certainly, your efforts and deeds are diverse.

Pickthall

Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends).

Qarai

your endeavours are indeed diverse.

Qaribullah & Darwish

your striving is indeed to different ends!

Sarwar

you strive in various ways.

Shakir

Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends).

Wahiduddin Khan

O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends!

Yusuf Ali

Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse.

فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَٱتَّقَىٰ ﴿٥﴾

As for he who gives and fears Allah

Transliteration

Faamma man aAAta waittaqa

Ahmed Ali

Yet he who gives to others and has fear,

Ahmed Raza Khan

So for one who gave and practised piety

Arberry

As for him who gives and is godfearing

Daryabadi

Then as for him who giveths and feareth Him.

Hilali & Khan

As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him,

Itani

As for him who gives and is righteous.

Maududi

As for him who gave out his wealth (for Allah's sake) and abstained (from disobeying Him),

Mubarakpuri

As for him who gives and has Taqwa,

Pickthall

As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah)

Qarai

As for him who gives and is Godwary

Qaribullah & Darwish

For him that gives and fears (Allah)

Sarwar

We shall facilitate the path to bliss

Shakir

Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil),

Wahiduddin Khan

As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God],

Yusuf Ali

So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah),

وَصَدَّقَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ﴿٦﴾

And believes in the best [reward],

Transliteration

Wasaddaqa bialhusna

Ahmed Ali

And affirms goodness,

Ahmed Raza Khan

And believed the best matter to be true

Arberry

and confirms the reward most fair,

Daryabadi

And testifieth to the Good,

Hilali & Khan

And believes in Al-Husna.

Itani

And confirms goodness.

Maududi

and affirmed the Truth of goodness:

Mubarakpuri

And believes in Al-Husna.

Pickthall

And believeth in goodness;

Qarai

and confirms the best promise,

Qaribullah & Darwish

and believes in the finest,

Sarwar

for those who spend for the cause of God,

Shakir

And accepts the best,

Wahiduddin Khan

and believes in the truth of what is right,

Yusuf Ali

And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,-

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ ﴿٧﴾

We will ease him toward ease.

Transliteration

Fasanuyassiruhu lilyusra

Ahmed Ali

We shall ease the way of fortune for him.

Ahmed Raza Khan

So We will very soon provide him ease.

Arberry

We shall surely ease him to the Easing.

Daryabadi

Unto him therefore We shall indeed make easy the path to ease.

Hilali & Khan

We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness).

Itani

We will ease his way towards ease.

Maududi

We shall facilitate for him the Way to Bliss.

Mubarakpuri

We will make smooth for him the path of ease.

Pickthall

Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease.

Qarai

We will surely ease him toward facility.

Qaribullah & Darwish

We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing;

Sarwar

observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God.

We will facilitate for him the easy end.

We will pave his way to ease.

We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss.

وَأَمَّا مَنۢ بَخِلَ وَٱسْتَغْنَىٰ ﴿٨﴾

But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need

Transliteration

Waamma man bakhila waistaghna

Ahmed Ali

But he who does not give and is unconcerned,

Ahmed Raza Khan

And for him who hoarded wealth and remained carefree,

Arberry

But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient,

Daryabadi

And as for him who stinteth and is heedless,

Hilali & Khan

But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient.

Itani

But as for him who is stingy and complacent.

Maududi

As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah),

Mubarakpuri

But he who is greedy and thinks himself self-sufficient,

Pickthall

But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent,

Qarai

But as for him, who is stingy and self-complacent,

Qaribullah & Darwish

but for him that is a miser, and sufficed,

Sarwar

But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth,

Shakir

And as for him who is niggardly and considers himself free from need (of Allah),

But as for one who is miserly and unheeding,

Yusuf Ali

But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient,

وَكَذَّبَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ﴿٩﴾

And denies the best [reward],

Transliteration

Wakaththaba bialhusna

Ahmed Ali

And rejects goodness,

Ahmed Raza Khan

And denied the best matter,

Arberry

and cries lies to the reward most fair,

Daryabadi

And who belieth the Good,

Hilali & Khan

And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote);

Itani

And denies goodness.

Maududi

and denied the Truth of goodness:

Mubarakpuri

And denies Al-Husna.

Pickthall

And disbelieveth in goodness;

Qarai

and denies the best promise,

Qaribullah & Darwish

and he belied the finest

Sarwar

and have no faith in receiving any reward (from God).

Shakir

And rejects the best,

Wahiduddin Khan

and rejects what is right,

Yusuf Ali

And gives the lie to the best,-

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْعُسْرَىٰ ﴿١٠﴾

We will ease him toward difficulty.

Transliteration

Fasanuyassiruhu lilAAusra

Ahmed Ali

For him We shall ease the way of adversity,

Ahmed Raza Khan

So We will very soon provide him hardship.

Arberry

We shall surely ease him to the Hardship;

Daryabadi

Unto him therefore We shall Indeed make easy the path to hardship.

Hilali & Khan

We will make smooth for him the path for evil;

Itani

We will ease his way towards difficulty.

Maududi

We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship,

We will make smooth for him the path to evil.

Surely We will ease his way unto adversity.

We will surely ease him toward hardship.

We shall surely ease for him the Path of Hardship (the Fire).

We shall facilitate the path to affliction

We will facilitate for him the difficult end.

We shall pave his way to hardship,

Yusuf Ali

We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery;

وَمَا يُغْنِى عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥٓ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰٓ ﴿١١﴾

And what will his wealth avail him when he falls?

Transliteration

Wama yughnee AAanhu maluhu itha taradda

Ahmed Ali

And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss).

Ahmed Raza Khan

His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin.

Arberry

his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes.

Daryabadi

And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth.

Hilali & Khan

And what will his wealth benefit him when he goes down (in destruction).

Itani

And his money will not avail him when he plummets.

Maududi

and his wealth shall be of no avail to him when he perishes.

Mubarakpuri

And what will his wealth avail him when he goes down (in destruction)

Pickthall

His riches will not save him when he perisheth.

Qarai

His wealth will not avail him when he perishes.

Qaribullah & Darwish

When he falls (into Hell), his wealth will not help him.

Sarwar

and their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they face destruction.

Shakir

And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes.

Wahiduddin Khan

nor will his wealth profit him when he falls [into the pit].

Yusuf Ali

Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit).

إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا لَلْهُدَىٰ ﴿١٢﴾

Indeed, [incumbent] upon Us is guidance.

Transliteration

Inna AAalayna lalhuda

Ahmed Ali

It is indeed for Us to show the way,

Ahmed Raza Khan

Indeed guiding is upon Us.

Arberry

Surely upon Us rests the guidance,

Daryabadi

Verify on us is the guidance

Hilali & Khan

Truly! Ours it is (to give) guidance,

Itani

It is upon Us to guide.

Maududi

Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way,

Mubarakpuri

Truly, on Us is (to give) guidance.

Pickthall

Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance

Qarai

Indeed guidance rests with Us,

Qaribullah & Darwish

Indeed, Guidance is Ours,

Sarwar

Surely, in Our hands is guidance,

Shakir

Surely Ours is it to show the way,

Wahiduddin Khan

Surely, it is for Us to provide guidance --

Yusuf Ali

Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide,

وَإِنَّ لَنَا لَلْءَاخِرَةَ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ ﴿١٣﴾

And indeed, to Us belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].

Transliteration

Wainna lana lalakhirata waaloola

Ahmed Ali

And to Us belong the End and the Beginning.

Ahmed Raza Khan

And indeed the Hereafter and this world both belong to Us.

Arberry

and to Us belong the Last and the First.

Daryabadi

And verify Ours is both the Hereafter and the life present.

Hilali & Khan

And truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world).

Itani

And to Us belong the Last and the First.

Maududi

and to Us belong the Next Life and the present.

Mubarakpuri

And truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world).

Pickthall

And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former.

Qarai

and to Us belong the world and the Hereafter.

Qaribullah & Darwish

and to Us belong the Last and the First.

Sarwar

and to Us belong the hereafter and the worldly life.

Shakir

And most surely Ours is the hereafter and the former.

Wahiduddin Khan

and to Us belongs the Hereafter as well as the present world --

Yusuf Ali

And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning.

فَأَنذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًۭا تَلَظَّىٰ ﴿١٤﴾

So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing.

Transliteration

Faanthartukum naran talaththa

Ahmed Ali

So, I warn you of the blazing Fire.

Ahmed Raza Khan

I therefore warn you of the fire that is ablaze.

Arberry

Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames,

Daryabadi

Wherefore have warned you of Fire flaming,

Hilali & Khan

Therefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell);

Itani

I have warned you of a Fierce Blaze.

Maududi

I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire,

Mubarakpuri

Therefore I have warned you of a Fire Talazza.

Pickthall

Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire

Qarai

So I warn you of a blazing fire,

Qaribullah & Darwish

I have now warned you of the Blazing Fire,

Sarwar

I have warned you about the fierce blazing fire

Shakir

Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames:

Wahiduddin Khan

I have warned you then about a raging Fire:

Yusuf Ali

Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely;

لَا يَصْلَىٰهَآ إِلَّا ٱلْأَشْقَى ﴿١٥﴾

None will [enter to] burn therein except the most wretched one.

Transliteration

La yaslaha illa alashqa

Ahmed Ali

No one will burn in it but the most wretched,

Ahmed Raza Khan

None except the most wicked will enter it.

Arberry

whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted,

Daryabadi

None shall roast therein but the most wretched,

Hilali & Khan

None shall enter it save the most wretched,

Itani

None will burn in it except the very wicked.

Maududi

where none shall burn except the most wicked,

Mubarakpuri

None shall enter it save the most wretched.

Pickthall

Which only the most wretched must endure,

Qarai

which none shall enter except the most wretched [of persons]

Qaribullah & Darwish

in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner,

Sarwar

in which no one will suffer forever

Shakir

None shall enter it but the most unhappy,

Wahiduddin Khan

none shall enter it but the most wicked,

Yusuf Ali

None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones

ٱلَّذِى كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ﴿١٦﴾

Who had denied and turned away.

Transliteration

Allathee kaththaba watawalla

Ahmed Ali

Who denied (the truth) and turned away.

Ahmed Raza Khan

The one who denied and turned away.

Arberry

even he who cried lies, and turned away;

Daryabadi

Who belieth and turneth away.

Hilali & Khan

Who denies and turns away.

Itani

He who denies and turns away.

Maududi

who rejected the Truth, calling it falsehood and turned his back on it.

Mubarakpuri

Who denies and turns away.

Pickthall

He who denieth and turneth away.

Qarai

—he who impugns [God’s prophets] and turns his back.

Qaribullah & Darwish

who belied and turned away,

Sarwar

except the wicked ones who have rejected the (Truth) and have turned away from it.

Shakir

Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back.

Wahiduddin Khan

who denied [the truth], and turned away.

Yusuf Ali

Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs.

وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَا ٱلْأَتْقَى ﴿١٧﴾

But the righteous one will avoid it -

Transliteration

Wasayujannabuha alatqa

Ahmed Ali

But save him who fears

Ahmed Raza Khan

He will be far away from the most pious. (The first Caliph S. Abu Bakr Siddiq)

Arberry

and from which the most godfearing shall be removed,

Daryabadi

And avoid it shall the most pious,

Hilali & Khan

And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell).

Itani

But the devout will avoid it.

Maududi

But the God-fearing shall be kept away from it,

Mubarakpuri

And those with Taqwa will be far removed from it.

Pickthall

Far removed from it will be the righteous

Qarai

The Godwary [person] will be spared of that

Qaribullah & Darwish

and from which the cautious shall be distanced.

Sarwar

The pious ones who spend for the cause of God

Shakir

And away from it shall be kept the one who guards most (against evil),

Wahiduddin Khan

One who fears God shall be kept away from it --

Yusuf Ali

But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,-

ٱلَّذِى يُؤْتِى مَالَهُۥ يَتَزَكَّىٰ ﴿١٨﴾

[He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself

Transliteration

Allathee yutee malahu yatazakka

Ahmed Ali

And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue,

Ahmed Raza Khan

Who gives his wealth in order to be pure.

Arberry

even he who gives his wealth. to purify himself

Daryabadi

Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed,

Hilali & Khan

He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification,

Itani

He who gives his money to become pure.

Maududi

the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself;

Mubarakpuri

He who gives of his wealth for self-purification.

Pickthall

Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness).

Qarai

—he who gives his wealth to purify himself

Qaribullah & Darwish

He who gives his wealth to be purified,

Sarwar

and purify themselves will be safe from this fire.

Shakir

Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself

Wahiduddin Khan

one who gives his wealth to become purified,

Yusuf Ali

Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification,

وَمَا لِأَحَدٍ عِندَهُۥ مِن نِّعْمَةٍۢ تُجْزَىٰٓ ﴿١٩﴾

And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded

Transliteration

Wama liahadin AAindahu min niAAmatin tujza

Ahmed Ali

And is under no one's obligation to return his favour,

Ahmed Raza Khan

And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated.

Arberry

and confers no favour on any man for recompense,

Daryabadi

And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense.

Hilali & Khan

And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return,

Itani

Seeking no favor in return.

Maududi

not as payment for any favours that he received,

Mubarakpuri

And who has (in mind) no favor from anyone to be paid back.

Pickthall

And none hath with him any favour for reward,

Qarai

and does not expect any reward from anyone,

Qaribullah & Darwish

and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense

Sarwar

They do not expect any reward

Shakir

And no one has with him any boon for which he should be rewarded,

Wahiduddin Khan

and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid,

Yusuf Ali

And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return,

إِلَّا ٱبْتِغَآءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ ﴿٢٠﴾

But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High.

Transliteration

Illa ibtighaa wajhi rabbihi alaAAla

Ahmed Ali

Other than seeking the glory of his Lord, most high,

Ahmed Raza Khan

He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme.

Arberry

only seeking the Face of his Lord the Most High;

Daryabadi

But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High.

Hilali & Khan

Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High;

Itani

Only seeking the acceptance of his Lord, the Most High.

Maududi

but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High.

Mubarakpuri

Except to seek the Face of his Lord, the Most High.

Pickthall

Except as seeking (to fulfil) the purpose of his Lord Most High.

Qarai

but seek only the pleasure of their Lord, the Most Exalted,

Qaribullah & Darwish

seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High,

Sarwar

except the pleasure of their Lord, the Most High

Shakir

Except the seeking of the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High.

Wahiduddin Khan

acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High --

Yusuf Ali

But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High;

وَلَسَوْفَ يَرْضَىٰ ﴿٢١﴾

And he is going to be satisfied.

Transliteration

Walasawfa yarda

Ahmed Ali

Will surely be gratified.

Ahmed Raza Khan

And indeed, soon he will be very pleased.

Arberry

and he shall surely be satisfied.

Daryabadi

And presently he shall become wellpleased.

Hilali & Khan

He surely will be pleased (when he will enter Paradise).

Itani

And he will be satisfied.

Maududi

He will surely be well-pleased (with him).

Mubarakpuri

He, surely, will be pleased.

Pickthall

He verily will be content.

Qarai

and, surely, soon they will be well-pleased.

Qaribullah & Darwish

surely, he shall be satisfied.

Sarwar

and the reward (of their Lord) will certainly make them happy.

Shakir

And he shall soon be well-pleased.

Wahiduddin Khan

and before long he will be well satisfied.

Yusuf Ali

And soon will they attain (complete) satisfaction.
