وَٱلْفَجْرِ ﴿١﴾

By the dawn

Transliteration

Waalfajri

I CALL TO witness the dawn

وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍۢ ﴿٢﴾

And [by] ten nights

Transliteration

Walayalin AAashrin

Ahmed Ali

And the Ten Nights,

And by oath of ten nights.

And by ten nights,

By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah).

وَٱلشَّفْعِ وَٱلْوَتْرِ ﴿٣﴾

And [by] the even [number] and the odd

Transliteration

WaalshshafAAi waalwatri

The multiple and the one,

And by oath of the even and the odd.

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ ﴿٤﴾

And [by] the night when it passes,

Waallayli itha yasri

The night as it advances,

And by oath of the night when it recedes

And by the Night when it passeth away;-

هَلْ فِى ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌۭ لِّذِى حِجْرٍ ﴿٥﴾

Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?

Transliteration

Hal fee thalika qasamun lithee hijrin

Ahmed Ali

Is there not an evidence in this for those who have sense?

Ahmed Raza Khan

Why is there an oath in this, for the intelligent?

Arberry

Is there in that an oath for a mindful man?

Daryabadi

Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense.

Hilali & Khan

There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)!

Is there in this an oath for a rational person?

Maududi

Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding?

Mubarakpuri

Is there (not) in them sufficient proofs for men of understanding!

There surely is an oath for thinking man.

Is there an oath in that for one possessing intellect?

Is there in that an oath for the mindful?

Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people?

Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding.

is there not in this strong evidence for a man of sense?

Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand?

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ ﴿٦﴾

Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad -

Transliteration

Alam tara kayfa faAAala rabbuka biAAadin

Ahmed Ali

Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad

Ahmed Raza Khan

Did you not see how did your Lord deal with (the tribe of) Aad?

Arberry

Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad,

Daryabadi

Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad:

Hilali & Khan

Did you (O Muhammad (Peace be upon him)) not see (thought) how your Lord dealt with 'Ad (people)?

Itani

Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Aad?

Maududi

Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad

Saw you not how your Lord dealt with `Ad

Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad,

Have you not regarded how your Lord dealt with [the people of] ‘Ad,

Have you not heard how your Lord dealt with Aad?

(Muhammad), consider how your Lord dealt with the tribe of Ad,

Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with Ad,

Have you not heard of how your Lord dealt with the tribe of 'Ad,

Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),-

إِرَمَ ذَاتِ ٱلْعِمَادِ ﴿٧﴾

[With] Iram - who had lofty pillars,

Transliteration

Irama thati alAAimadi

Of Eram with lofty pillars (erected as signposts in the desert),

(And) the tall giants of Iram?

Iram of the pillars,

The people of many-columned lram.

Who were very tall like lofty pillars,

Erum of the pillars.

of Iram, known for their lofty columns,

Iram of the pillars,

[and] Iram, [the city] of the pillars,

(The people of) Aram, possessors of lofty buildings,

Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars,

ٱلَّتِى لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِى ٱلْبِلَٰدِ ﴿٨﴾

The likes of whom had never been created in the land?

Transliteration

Allatee lam yukhlaq mithluha fee albiladi

Ahmed Ali

The like of whom were never created in the realm;

Like whom no one else was born in the cities.

the like of which was never created in the land,

The like of which was not built in the cities,

The like of which were not created in the land?

The like of which was never created in the land.

the like of whom no nation was ever created in the lands of the world?

The like of which were not produced in (all) the land?

وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُوا۟ ٱلصَّخْرَ بِٱلْوَادِ ﴿٩﴾

And [with] Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley?

Transliteration

Wathamooda allatheena jaboo alssakhra bialwadi

Ahmed Ali

And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley;

Ahmed Raza Khan

And the tribe of Thamud, who hewed rocks in the valley.

and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley,

Daryabadi

And With Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale,

Hilali & Khan

And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)?

Itani

And Thamood—those who carved the rocks in the valley.

Maududi

And how did He deal with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley?

Mubarakpuri

And Thamud, who hewed out rocks in the valley

Pickthall

And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley;

Qarai

and [the people of] Thamud, who hollowed out the rocks in the valley,

Qaribullah & Darwish

And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley?

Sarwar

(Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley.

And (with) Samood, who hewed out the rocks in the valley,

Wahiduddin Khan

and with the Thamud, who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley,

Yusuf Ali

And with the Thamud (people), who cut out (huge) rocks in the valley?-

وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِى ٱلْأَوْتَادِ ﴿١٠﴾

And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? -

Transliteration

WafirAAawna thee alawtadi

Ahmed Ali

And the mighty Pharaoh

Ahmed Raza Khan

And with Firaun, who used to crucify.

Arberry

and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs,

Daryabadi

And with Fir'awn, owner of the stakes -

Hilali & Khan

And (with) Fir'aun (Pharaoh), who had pegs (who used to torture men by binding them to pegs)?

Itani

And Pharaoh of the Stakes.

Maududi

And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs

Mubarakpuri

And Fir`awn with Al-Awtad

Pickthall

And with Pharaoh, firm of might,

Qarai

and Pharaoh, the impaler

Qaribullah & Darwish

And Pharaoh, of the pegs (impaling his victims)?

Sarwar

(Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake,

Shakir

And (with) Firon, the lord of hosts,

Wahiduddin Khan

and with Pharaoh of the stakes?

Yusuf Ali

And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes?

ٱلَّذِينَ طَغَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَٰدِ ﴿١١﴾

[All of] whom oppressed within the lands

Transliteration

Allatheena taghaw fee albiladi

Ahmed Ali

Who terrorised the region,

Ahmed Raza Khan

Those who rebelled in the cities,

Arberry

who all were insolent in the land

Daryabadi

Who all waxed exorbitant in the cities,

Hilali & Khan

Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands (in the disobedience of Allah).

Itani

Those who committed excesses in the lands.

Maududi

who transgressed in the countries of the world

Mubarakpuri

Who did transgress beyond bounds in the lands.

Pickthall

Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands,

Qarai

—those who rebelled [against Allah] in their cities

Qaribullah & Darwish

They were tyrants in the land

Sarwar

led rebellious lives,

Shakir

Who committed inordinacy in the cities,

Wahiduddin Khan

All of them committed excesses in their lands,

Yusuf Ali

(All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands,

فَأَكْثَرُوا۟ فِيهَا ٱلْفَسَادَ ﴿١٢﴾

And increased therein the corruption.

Transliteration

Faaktharoo feeha alfasada

Ahmed Ali

And multiplied corruption.

Ahmed Raza Khan

And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them.

Arberry

and worked much corruption therein?

Daryabadi

And multiplied therein corruption.

Hilali & Khan

And made therein much mischief.

Itani

And spread much corruption therein.

Maududi

spreading in them much corruption?

Mubarakpuri

And made therein much mischief.

Pickthall

And multiplied iniquity therein?

Qarai

and caused much corruption in them,

Qaribullah & Darwish

and exceeded in corruption therein.

Sarwar

and spread much corruption in the land.

Shakir

So they made great mischief therein?

Wahiduddin Khan

and caused much corruption in them:

Yusuf Ali

And heaped therein mischief (on mischief).

فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ ﴿١٣﴾

So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.

Transliteration

Fasabba AAalayhim rabbuka sawta AAathabin

Ahmed Ali

So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them.

Ahmed Raza Khan

Therefore your Lord struck them hard with the means of punishment.

Arberry

Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement;

Daryabadi

Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment.

Hilali & Khan

So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment.

Itani

So your Lord poured down upon them a scourge of punishment.

Maududi

Then their Lord unloosed upon them the lash of chastisement.

Mubarakpuri

So, your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment.

Pickthall

Therefore thy Lord poured on them the disaster of His punishment.

so your Lord poured on them lashes of punishment.

Qaribullah & Darwish

(Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment;

Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment;

Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement.

so your Lord unleashed on them the scourge of punishment:

Yusuf Ali

Therefore did thy Lord pour on them a scourge of diverse chastisements:

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ ﴿١٤﴾

Indeed, your Lord is in observation.

Transliteration

Inna rabbaka labialmirsadi

Ahmed Ali

Your Lord is certainly in wait.

Ahmed Raza Khan

Indeed nothing is hidden from the sight of your Lord.

Arberry

surely thy Lord is ever on the watch.

Daryabadi

Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade,

Hilali & Khan

Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them).

Itani

Your Lord is on the lookout.

Maududi

Truly your Lord is ever watchful.

Mubarakpuri

Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful.

Pickthall

Lo! thy Lord is ever watchful.

Qarai

Indeed your Lord is in ambush.

Qaribullah & Darwish

indeed, your Lord is ever watchful.

Sarwar

your Lord keeps an eye on (all evil-doing people).

Shakir

Most surely your Lord is watching.

Wahiduddin Khan

for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch!

Yusuf Ali

For thy Lord is (as a Guardian) on a watch-tower.

فَأَمَّا ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَكْرَمَنِ ﴿١٥﴾

And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, \"My Lord has honored me.\"

Transliteration

Faamma alinsanu itha ma ibtalahu rabbuhu faakramahu wanaAAAAamahu fayaqoolu rabbee akramani

Ahmed Ali

As for man, whenever his Lord tries him and then is gracious and provides good things for him, he says: \"My Lord has been gracious to me.\"

Ahmed Raza Khan

So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.”

Arberry

As for man, whenever his Lord tries him, and honours him, and blesses him, then he says, 'My Lord has honoured me.'

Daryabadi

As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous Unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me,

Hilali & Khan

As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): \"My Lord has honoured me.\"

Itani

As for man, whenever his Lord tests him, and honors him, and prospers him, he says, “My Lord has honored me.”

Maududi

As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.”

Mubarakpuri

As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honor and bounties, then he says: \"My Lord has honored me.\"

Pickthall

As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me.

Qarai

As for man, whenever his Lord tests him, and grants him honour, and blesses him, he says, ‘My Lord has honoured me.’

As for man, when his Lord tests him by honoring him and favoring him, he says: 'My Lord, has honored me'

Sarwar

As for the human being, when his Lord tests him, honors him, and grants him bounty, he says, \"God has honored me\".

Shakir

And as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me.

Wahiduddin Khan

As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, \"My Lord has honoured me,\"

Yusuf Ali

Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), \"My Lord hath honoured me.\"

وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَهَٰنَنِ ﴿١٦﴾

But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, \"My Lord has humiliated me.\"

Transliteration

Waamma itha ma ibtalahu faqadara AAalayhi rizqahu fayaqoolu rabbee ahanani

Ahmed Ali

But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: \"My Lord despises me.\"

Ahmed Raza Khan

And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!”

Arberry

But when he tries him and stints for him his provision, then he says, 'My Lord has despised me.'

Daryabadi

And when He proveth him, and so stinteth Unto him his provision, he saith: 'my Lord hath despised me.

Hilali & Khan

But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: \"My Lord has humiliated me!\"

Itani

But whenever He tests him, and restricts his livelihood for him, he says, “My Lord has insulted me.”

Maududi

But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.”

Mubarakpuri

But when He tries him by straitening his means of life, he says: \"My Lord has humiliated me!\"

Pickthall

But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me.

Qarai

But when He tests him and tightens for him his provision, he says, ‘My Lord has humiliated me.’

Qaribullah & Darwish

But when He tests him by restricting his provision, he says: 'My Lord has humiliated me'

Sarwar

However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, \"God has disgraced me\".

Shakir

But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me.

Wahiduddin Khan

but when He tests him by straitening his means of livelihood, he says, \"My Lord has disgraced me.\"

Yusuf Ali

But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), \"My Lord hath humiliated me!\"

كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ ٱلْيَتِيمَ ﴿١٧﴾

No! But you do not honor the orphan

Transliteration

Kalla bal la tukrimoona alyateema

Ahmed Ali

No. In fact you are not generous to the orphans,

Ahmed Raza Khan

Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan.

Arberry

No indeed; but you honour not the orphan,

Daryabadi

By no means! But ye honour not the orphan,

Hilali & Khan

Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)!

Itani

Not at all. But you do not honor the orphan.

Maududi

But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably,

Mubarakpuri

But no! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity!

Pickthall

Nay, but ye (for your part) honour not the orphan

Qarai

No indeed! No, you do not honour the orphan,

Qaribullah & Darwish

No! But you show no good to the orphan,

Sarwar

(Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans,

Shakir

Nay! but you do not honor the orphan,

Wahiduddin Khan

No indeed, but you show no kindness to the orphan,

Yusuf Ali

Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans!

وَلَا تَحَٰٓضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ ﴿١٨﴾

And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.

Transliteration

Wala tahaddoona AAala taAAami almiskeeni

Ahmed Ali

Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor,

Ahmed Raza Khan

And do not urge one another to feed the needy.

Arberry

and you urge not the feeding of the needy,

Daryabadi

Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor,

Hilali & Khan

And urge not on the feeding of AlMiskin (the poor)!

Itani

And you do not urge the feeding of the poor.

Maududi

and do not urge one another to feed the poor,

Mubarakpuri

And urge not one another on the feeding of the Miskin!

Pickthall

And urge not on the feeding of the poor.

Qarai

and do not urge the feeding of the needy.

Qaribullah & Darwish

nor do you urge one another to feed the needy.

Sarwar

or urge one another to feed the destitute?

Shakir

Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor,

nor do you urge one another to feed the poor,

Yusuf Ali

Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!-

وَتَأْكُلُونَ ٱلتُّرَاثَ أَكْلًۭا لَّمًّۭا ﴿١٩﴾

And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,

Transliteration

Watakuloona altturatha aklan lamman

Ahmed Ali

And you devour (others') inheritance greedily,

Ahmed Raza Khan

And you readily devour the inheritance with greed.

Arberry

and you devour the inheritance greedily,

Daryabadi

And devour the inheritance devouring greedily,

Hilali & Khan

And you devour inheritance all with greed,

Itani

And you devour inheritance with all greed.

Maududi

and greedily devour the entire inheritance,

Mubarakpuri

And you devour the Turath -- devouring with greed.

Pickthall

And ye devour heritages with devouring greed.

Qarai

You eat the inheritance rapaciously,

Qaribullah & Darwish

and you devour the inheritance with greed,

Sarwar

Why do you take away the inheritance of others indiscriminately

Shakir

And you eat away the heritage, devouring (everything) indiscriminately,

Wahiduddin Khan

and you greedily devour the inheritance of the weak,

Yusuf Ali

And ye devour inheritance - all with greed,

وَتُحِبُّونَ ٱلْمَالَ حُبًّۭا جَمًّۭا ﴿٢٠﴾

And you love wealth with immense love.

Transliteration

Watuhibboona almala hubban jamman

Ahmed Ali

And love wealth with all your heart.

Ahmed Raza Khan

And you harbour intense love for wealth.

Arberry

and you love wealth with an ardent love

Daryabadi

And ye love riches with exceeding love.

Hilali & Khan

And you love wealth with much love!

Itani

And you love wealth with immense love.

Maududi

and love the riches, loving them ardently.

Mubarakpuri

And you love wealth with love Jamma.

And love wealth with abounding love.

Qarai

and love wealth with much fondness.

Qaribullah & Darwish

and you ardently love wealth.

and why do you have an excessive love of riches?

Shakir

And you love wealth with exceeding love.

and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied.

Yusuf Ali

And ye love wealth with inordinate love!

كَلَّآ إِذَا دُكَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ دَكًّۭا دَكًّۭا ﴿٢١﴾

No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed -

Transliteration

Kalla itha dukkati alardu dakkan dakkan

Ahmed Ali

Surely when We pound the earth to powder grounded, pounded to dust,

Ahmed Raza Khan

Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits.

Arberry

No indeed! When the earth is ground to powder,

Daryabadi

By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding,

Hilali & Khan

Nay! When the earth is ground to powder,

Itani

No—when the earth is leveled, pounded, and crushed.

Maududi

But no; when the earth is ground to powder,

Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding,

No indeed! When the earth is levelled to a plain,

No! But when the earth quakes and is pounded,

When the earth is crushed into small pieces

Nay! when the earth is made to crumble to pieces,

No indeed! When the earth is crushed and ground to dust,

Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder,

وَجَآءَ رَبُّكَ وَٱلْمَلَكُ صَفًّۭا صَفًّۭا ﴿٢٢﴾

And your Lord has come and the angels, rank upon rank,

Transliteration

Wajaa rabbuka waalmalaku saffan saffan

Ahmed Ali

And comes your Lord, and angels row on row,

Ahmed Raza Khan

And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row,

and thy Lord comes, and the angels rank on rank,

And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank.

And your Lord comes with the angels in rows,

And your Lord comes, with the angels, row after row.

and when your Lord appears with rows upon rows of angels,

And your Lord comes with the angels in rows.

and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you.

And your Lord comes and (also) the angels in ranks,

when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank,

And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank,

وَجِا۟ىٓءَ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ ﴿٢٣﴾

And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance?

Transliteration

Wajeea yawmaithin bijahannama yawmaithin yatathakkaru alinsanu waanna lahu alththikra

Ahmed Ali

And Hell is brought near, that day will man remember, but of what avail will then remembering be?

Ahmed Raza Khan

And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think?

Arberry

and Gehenna is brought out, upon that day man will remember; and how shall the Reminder be for him?

Daryabadi

And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him?

Hilali & Khan

And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him?

Itani

And on that Day, Hell is brought forward. On that Day, man will remember, but how will remembrance avail him?

Maududi

and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be?

Mubarakpuri

And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance avail him

And hell is brought near that day; on that day man will remember, but how will the remembrance (then avail him)?

the day when hell is brought [near], man will take admonition on that day, but what will that admonition avail him?

and Gehenna (Hell) is brought near on that Day the human will remember, and how shall the Reminder be for him?

On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him.

And hell is made to appear on that day. On that day shall man be mindful, and what shall being mindful (then) avail him?

and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him?

Yusuf Ali

And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him?

يَقُولُ يَٰلَيْتَنِى قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِى ﴿٢٤﴾

He will say, \"Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life.\"

Transliteration

Yaqoolu ya laytanee qaddamtu lihayatee

Ahmed Ali

He will say: \"Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life.\"

Ahmed Raza Khan

He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!”

Arberry

He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!'

Daryabadi

He will say. 'would that I had sent before for this life of mine!

Hilali & Khan

He will say: \"Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!\"

Itani

He will say, “If only I had forwarded for my life.”

Maududi

He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!”

Mubarakpuri

He will say: \"Alas! Would that I had sent forth for my life!\"

Pickthall

He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life!

Qarai

He will say, ‘Alas, had I sent ahead for my life [in the Hereafter]!’

Qaribullah & Darwish

He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!'

Sarwar

He will say, \"Would that I had done some good deeds for this life\".

Shakir

He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life!

Wahiduddin Khan

He will say, \"Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life!\"

Yusuf Ali

He will say: \"Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!\"

فَيَوْمَئِذٍۢ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌۭ ﴿٢٥﴾

So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,

Transliteration

Fayawmaithin la yuAAaththibu AAathabahu ahadun

Ahmed Ali

None can punish as He will punish on that day,

Ahmed Raza Khan

So on that day, no one punishes like He does!

Arberry

Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises,

Daryabadi

Wherefore on that Day none shall torment with His torment.

Hilali & Khan

So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish.

Itani

On that Day, none will punish as He punishes.

Maududi

Then on that Day Allah will chastise as none other can chastise;

Mubarakpuri

So on that Day none will punish as He will punish.

None punisheth as He will punish on that day!

On that day none shall punish as He punishes,

On that day the punishment of God and His detention will be unparalleled.

وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌۭ ﴿٢٦﴾

And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].

Wala yoothiqu wathaqahu ahadun

And none can bind as He will bind.

And no one binds like He does!

none shall bind as He binds.

Nor shall any bind with His bond.

And none will bind as He will bind.

And none will shackle as He shackles.

and Allah will bind as none other can bind.

يَٰٓأَيَّتُهَا ٱلنَّفْسُ ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ ﴿٢٧﴾

[To the righteous it will be said], \"O reassured soul,

Ya ayyatuha alnnafsu almutmainnatu

Ahmed Ali

O you tranquil soul,

Ahmed Raza Khan

O the contented soul!

'O soul at peace,

Daryabadi

O thou peaceful soul!

Hilali & Khan

(It will be said to the pious): \"O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction!

But as for you, O tranquil soul.

(On the other hand it will be said): “O serene soul!

\"O tranquil soul!\"

But ah! thou soul at peace!

ٱرْجِعِىٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةًۭ مَّرْضِيَّةًۭ ﴿٢٨﴾

Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],

Transliteration

IrjiAAee ila rabbiki radiyatan mardiyyatan

Ahmed Ali

Return to your Lord, well-pleased and well-pleasing Him.

Ahmed Raza Khan

Return towards your Lord – you being pleased with Him, and He pleased with you!

return unto thy Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing!

Return Unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing.
